I started running in 2010. After leaving the Army in 1997, where I had played rugby at a unit that had a high percentage of the Army Rugby team, I concentrated on my career. I met my wife and we had our daughter, Megan. I then took up playing rugby again, for South Woodham Ferrers in Essex. I loved playing club rugby, but when I moved to Hampshire in 2003 I unfortunately never found a club or indeed the time to continue playing regularly. I did play a few games for the 'vets' at Gosport and Fareham, but we ended up playing other club's second teams. This resulted in people who aspired to play in their home club's first team trying to break my ribs at every opportunity, so I decided to hang up my boots.
It was a number of years from then until I 'took up' running, and a few more until I took it up properly. I'm not here to preach or sell anything, but I decided to start this blog after talking to Elisabet Barnes, who, if you don't know, is a two-time winner of the Marathon des Sables and much much more. She told me that I had an inspiring story, so I thought that I would try to document it. My older races may be a bit lacking in detail and information - I have used Strava and Garmin to fill in the blanks. This website is more of a record for me, but if it helps or interests anyone else, I am flattered and I hope it's useful to you.
